Rallidae

Rallidae

The birds of this family are referred to as Rails. Rallidae are a large family of around 130 species of small and medium sized birds.  They like to live in dense vegetation. They are generally secretive and are shy birds.  They have short bodies, ideal for running through the dense vegetation. Their bills are down-curved and big enough for probing prey in mud. Most of them have long toes and can spread their weight over the mud.  Their powerful legs help in running and can also be used to defend themselves from other birds. All the members of this family live near water and marshy areas. The coots can be said to be truly aquatic because they spend most of their time swimming in water. Their long toes are enlarged with sizable lobes to help them swimming. The following species of birds of Rallidae can be found near Delhi Public School Tapi at Surat.
